Work Certifications in Australia

Your Guide to Common Certificates Required in Australia

In Australia, certain certifications are mandatory for specific professions or industries. You may want to consider completing one or multiple of these qualifications once you arrive in Australia to help you in your job search. Here’s an overview of the key certifications needed for various jobs in Australia:

RSA (Responsible Service of Alcohol)

The RSA certificate is mandatory for anyone who serves or sells alcohol in Australia. It ensures workers understand how to handle alcohol responsibly and avoid harm to individuals or the public.

  • Different requirements by state:
    • RSA New South Wales (NSW): Only Valid in New South Wales
    • RSA Victoria (VIC): Only Valid in Victoria
    • All Other States: The RSA in all other states is valid within these areas but NOT valid in VIC or NSW.

When completing the RSA some courses allow you to ‘upgrade’ your course to include all states. This option is more expensive but may be good if you are planning to work in multiple states as you travel Australia. Alternatively, if you move to a new state where your RSA is not valid, you can always complete the course again in that state.

How to get the RSA certificate:

Complete a state-approved RSA course either online or in-person. After successful completion, you will receive the RSA certification.

The course generally involves reading through modules of learning material and then a short test. It also usually includes either a video submission, audio test, or written script where you’ll need to demonstrate your ability to refuse someone service.

White Card (Construction Industry)

The White Card is required for individuals working in the construction industry in Australia. It is a certification that ensures workers are aware of safety standards and regulations on construction sites, promoting a safer work environment.

How to get it:

Complete a “Construction Induction Training” course, which covers essential safety knowledge such as risk management, safe work practices, and emergency response procedures. The course is available in both in-person and sometimes in combination with online formats and is recognized across all states and territories in Australia

Working with Vulnerable People Card (WWVP Card)

This card is required for individuals working with vulnerable groups, such as children, elderly people, or people with disabilities. It ensures that employees do not have a criminal history that would disqualify them from working in these sensitive roles.

  • Required for: Jobs in healthcare, child care (including nanny and au pair), education, social work, and other roles that involve interaction with vulnerable individuals.

How to get it:

Application for a WWVP card is made through the relevant state or territory government. In most cases, a police check will be required to assess if the individual has any serious criminal convictions. In some states, additional training or clearance may be required.

You can use the following links to find out more about the WWVP application in the relevant states below:

Police Check

A police check is often necessary for various professions, especially those working in environments where safety, care, or trust is paramount. You most likely will need a police check to complete your WWVP application.

How to get it:

Online application: Complete the Australian Federal Police (AFP) National Police Check application form.

Use: ‘Commonwealth employment / purpose’ when asked about the purpose type code ’33’ for when asked about the purpose of the check

You can find the application online here.

If you are having problems using this form you can also visit your local Australian Police Station for assistance and advice.

Barista Courses

Barista courses are designed to equip individuals with the necessary skills to work as professional coffee makers in cafes, restaurants, or coffee shops. The courses focus on brewing techniques, espresso preparation, latte art, and customer service, all of which are crucial for working as a barista.

How to get it:

Barista courses are offered by various registered training organizations, typically in a short-term, hands-on format. These courses teach essential skills, such as using espresso machines, creating different types of coffee drinks, maintaining equipment, and delivering excellent customer service. While these courses are not mandatory to work as a barista, they significantly improve job prospects and are often preferred by employers.
