Restoration Ranger – Dunedin

We’re involved with several high-profile ecological restoration projects across Otago, Southland and the Waitaki. We have opportunities to be part of a proactive team renowned for making a difference.

Job Description: A ‘Restoration Ranger’ requires a high level of physical and mental fitness. We carry out a broad range of practical and physical conservation tasks in often challenging, unforgiving, isolated and fragile eco-systems as set out below:

  • Tree planting and the installation of plant guards ie digging holes with spades or petrol earth augers, planting native plants in holes, folding and installing plant guards)
  • Weed control using a combination of techniques ie knapsack, spray gun scrub bar, chainsaw, hand releasing. (A Growsafe certificate will be required)
  • Installation, monitoring, clearing and reporting of trapline networks.
  • Upkeep and maintenance of grounds, tracks and infrastructure.
  • Assistance with training and supervision of colleagues, volunteers and public events if required.
  • Reporting and mapping on weed and pest control projects

  • Big picture thinking, understanding the greater impact of our work. The ability to make constant assessments and create solutions on the fly to ensure safety, efficiency and productivity
  • Capability in the outdoors – it’s a physically demanding job and there will be many days working in challenging weather ie hot, dry, windy, wet and combinations of all
  • A good attitude and willingness to learn and share with the team
  • An eye for detail and a sensitive approach
  • Great communication skills
  • A focus on safety and capable with manual labour
  • General/transferrable outdoor skills and experiences
    • Already holding industry standard tickets ie Growsafe, 4WD, LUV, chainsaw, first aid etc are always an advantage but not essential.

The majority of our projects are based rurally, rangers will need to be comfortable and available for this associated travel. Many projects are ‘out of the city’ and involve travel to rural areas. ‘Stay out’ projects are generally up to 5 days at a a time (Mon-Fri) and we like to be flexible where we can with offering shorter weeks as offset when manageable with project deadlines. Travel time, company vehicles, accommodation and food will be provided during projects which require overnight travel.
