Night Foaling Assistant – Matamata, Waikato

The night foaling attendant will be one of the main team members responsible for foaling down at our stables. The job involves watching the closest to foal mares from 8.00pm until 6.00am together with one other person and foaling them down.

Identify and bring the mare pre-foaling into a foaling yard

Check correct presentation and recognise obvious issues early (eg red bag, dystocia)

Assist the mare in foaling as needed, with two others

Complete post foaling checks and treatments of the mare and foal

Assess the foal’s progression and assist in first nursing as needed

Monitor the mare and foal closely until vet checks in the morning

Assess the need for additional team members or the resident vets if complications arise

Conduct treatments of boxed mares and foals

Make notes as any stocks get low for reordering

We typically foal down between 250 and 300 mares each season. We have a full night team in place while the day team are on hand if and when needed throughout the night. We have two full-time veterinarians on site during the season and very experienced staff. This represents a fantastic opportunity for someone who wants to gain genuine experience foaling and to be truly immersed and involved in all the processes that go along with it.

Experience with thoroughbreds is necessary along with a passion for foaling. We are looking for someone who shows diligence, a willingness to learn and a positive, team work ethic.
