Tourism Sales Retail Assistant – Stewart Island

Are you able to start work immediately and at least to the end of April 2025 without commitments during this busy work period.

You must be able to work mainly on your own and with the Owner (when she is not out with customers). The role carries a high level of responsibility, requires maturity, confidence and good decision-making.  It is suitable for a quick learner with attention to detail.  

You will need

  • Experience working in small to medium sized businesses.
  • Experience in hospitality, tourism, or retail.
  • Some experience in the outdoors.
  • Excellent written and verbal English language and communication skills.

WORK IN OUR BOOKING OFFICE AND OUTDOOR SHOP

  • Actively sell our tours, services and shop products.
  • Serve customers, answer their queries, assist them with their purchases.
  • Take payments.
  • Answer phones / emails.
  • Check in and brief customers.
  • Send reservation details as agreed.
  • Keep accurate and timely records.
  • Help distribute our brochures / marketing material on a daily basis at customer arrival points in Stewart Island.
  • Help restock the shop.
  • Clean returned hire gear.
  • Keep the office clean and tidy.
  • Help to clean the vehicles and boat.
  • Help with basic gardening and any other reasonable tasks.

LOCATION: Stewart Island / Rakiura.  

Ruggedy Range is based in Rakiura / Stewart Island.  A largely unmodified Island, almost entirely in wilderness, except for Oban Township and the surrounding 28 kms of road.  Approx. 400 people live here permanently.

There are daily flights to / from Invercargill and ferry services to / from Bluff.

ACCOMMODATION 

Clean, comfortable staff accommodation available to rent, fully equipped and furnished, all bedding, linen supplied. Shared facilities.  Garden area.

$175.00 per week for single person in a room or $270.00 for a couple in a shared room. Bills approx $50 p.p. per month (gas / electricity).

ABOUT THE COMPANY 

Ruggedy Range Wilderness Experience is a small owner / operated nature tourism business, operating entirely in Stewart Island since 2000. We are currently extremely short-staffed.

Nature, wildlife and the environment are our key focus.

We offer: Guided nature walks, Overnight hikes, Bird watching and kiwi spotting tours, Scenic and birding road tours, Boat cruises, wildlife, scenic and historic, Water taxi service  We operates a small outdoor shop (located within the booking office), retailing and hiring outdoor clothing and equipment.

We are professional and hard working, focussing on quality, small group tours with opportunities for customers to interact as individuals.  Our priority is to provide excellent customer service, to maintain high standards and ensure the safety and well being of staff and customers.

A positive working environment with a competent, caring, reliable and loyal team are essential to our success. Honesty is important along with good communication. Teamwork is essential.

HOURS OF WORK & PAY RATE

Minimum 35 hours and maximum 40 hours a week.  Work  4.5 to 5 days a week rostered.

Training Wages for first 2 weeks: $ 23.15 + $1.85 (8%) holiday pay per hour = $25.00 per hour.

Thereafter:  $25.00 + $2.00 (8%)holiday pay per hour  = $27.00 per hour.

SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

  • Sales and retail experience essential.
  • Fluent and accurate spoken and written English with good communication and interpersonal skills are essential.
  • Excellent customer services skills (friendly and outgoing).
  • Ability to promote and make sales.
  • Accurate, with attention to detail.
  • Ability to multi-task, attention to detail and able to focus on priorities.
  • Good record keeping
  • Good computer skills (especially Mac: pages, numbers)
  • Punctual with good time keeping
  • An interest in the outdoors and advantage.
  • Current First Aid (valid for period of employment or willing to obtain).

OTHER CONSIDERATIONS

Personal presentation and hygiene are important in this front office role.  You must be fully vaccinated for COVID and have a good level of health and fitness.
